The red room in Gateshead Hall, Jane Eyre's aunt's house was a cold isolated chamber. Nobody slept in that room. It was cleaned once a week. Mr. Reed died in this room nine years ago. Jane was confined in the red room because she tried to defend herself. With the approach of darkness in the evening Jane suddenly felt afraid. The moonlit room and the continuous sound of rain and wind turned her thoughts to superstitions. She remembered how after the death of her parents she was taken by Mr. Reed as an orphan. She thought that if Mr. Reed, her mother's brother were alive he would have treated her kindly. She also thought that Mr. Reed's ghost would suddenly appear before her. She tried to be brave. Just then looking around the dark room she saw a ray of light falling on the wall. She turned more frightened. She also heard the sound of something coming near. Jane rushed to the door and shook it hard. At that she heard the voice of Bessie and Abbot. Bessie asked Jane if she was ill or hurt. Jane cried that she thought a ghost would come. Thus the dark and isolated red room frightened Jane.
